Virtual Therapy Over Video

What is Virtual Therapy?

Virtual therapy (often called telehealth or online counselling) is just like in-person, face-to-face therapy, but instead of sitting together in an office, we connect through a secure, confidential video call.

If you have ever used Zoom or FaceTime, you already know how to do virtual therapy. You bring yourself, a cup of tea or coffee, and your laptop or phone. I bring my clinical expertise, a listening ear, and a secure platform. We still see each other, we still build a meaningful connection, and we still do the deep, transformative work of therapy. The difference is that you just get to do it from the comfort of your own couch.

Is virtual therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

This is usually the very first question people ask, and it is a completely valid one! The short answer is: yes, absolutely.

Decades of clinical research and studies have consistently shown that virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, and stress management.

The biggest predictor of success in therapy is not the room you are sitting in. It is the therapeutic alliance or the level of trust, safety, and connection you feel with your therapist. A strong, empathetic connection translates beautifully through a screen. While it might feel slightly different for the first ten minutes of your very first session, most clients completely forget about the screen once we dive into our conversation.

What are the benefits of virtual therapy?

Virtual therapy has completely transformed how people access mental health care, but like any modality, it comes with its own unique set of pros and cons.

The Benefits:

How does a virtual session actually work?

The process of virtual therapy is very simple and frictionless. You do not need to be a technology expert, and you do not need to download any complicated software.

Before our scheduled time, you will receive an email with a unique, secure link. A few minutes before our session begins, simply find a quiet, private space, click the link on your computer, tablet, or smartphone, and you will be brought into our private virtual waiting room. I will join you, and we will begin! The platform I use is fully encrypted and compliant with all Canadian privacy and health regulations (PHIPA), ensuring that everything we discuss remains strictly confidential.

Is virtual therapy the right fit for me?

While virtual therapy is highly effective for most people, it ultimately comes down to your personal learning style and living situation.

If you value flexibility, feel more comfortable opening up in your own environment, and have a reliable internet connection, virtual therapy is likely an incredible fit for you. It allows us to seamlessly integrate your mental health care into your actual daily life.

If you are curious about how it feels to connect through a screen, or if you want to test out the technology before committing, I highly encourage you to reach out. I offer free, brief virtual consultations exactly for this reason. Let’s chat, test the waters, and see if this approach feels right for your journey.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you don't! You will receive a simple, secure link in your email before our session. You just click the link, and it will open directly in your web browser. There is no complicated software to install or update.

Absolutely. The video platform I use is specifically designed for healthcare providers. It is fully encrypted and compliant with PHIPA (Ontario's health privacy laws), meaning our sessions are just as confidential as they would be behind a closed office door. None of our sessions are ever recorded.

Yes. Ontario extended health benefits plans that cover traditional psychotherapy also cover virtual psychotherapy. However, every plan is different, so I always recommend double-checking with your provider to see what your specific coverage looks like.

Technology isn't perfect, and occasionally, a connection might freeze or drop. Don't worry! If we get disconnected, we will both simply try to rejoin the secure link. If the internet completely fails, we will have a backup plan in place (like switching to a standard phone call) so you don't lose your session time.

I understand that not everyone has a private space to do virtual therapy from. In those cases, a car will be fine. As long as you are parked safely in a quiet, private location! Many clients find that their car is the most private place they have, especially if they have a busy household or are squeezing a session into their lunch break. Please just ensure you are not driving during our time together.

While having the camera on helps us build a stronger connection and allows me to read your facial expressions, your comfort is my top priority. If you are feeling "Zoom fatigue" or are having a particularly vulnerable day, we can absolutely turn the cameras off and do an audio-only session.
